Who are our mountain leaders?
All the SAHS members listed below are qualified international mountain leaders (IML) who have been trained and assessed against the challenging requirements of UIMLA.
They have the necessary qualifications to meet requirements laid down in the Act 544/2002 on Mountain Rescue Service.
The training course of a mountain leader is focused on navigation and orientation, the first aid and emergency procedures, the safety in the mountains – the rope techniques, group management, trip organization and planning, risk assessment, ensuring the safety of the whole group. A mountain leader is also familiar with the environment, fauna, flora, geology, etc.
All the SAHS members are licensed International Mountain Leaders (IML) which means that they can lead groups in different mountains all over the world.
There is no inexperienced mountain leader among the SAHS members. All of us have been subject to a rigorous training and assessment process which took two to three years and we have to keep our skills and experience up to date as we are retested every three years.
Safety first – a mountain leader is able to plan your trip so that it is as safe as possible. S/he advises you on the gear you’ll need and either provides you with it or recommends you the nearest rental service.
Every season is good for a hike but you need the appropriate equipment such as avalanche safety gear (avalanche probe, avalanche beacon, avalanche shovel), via ferrata kit, helmet, crampons or microspikes, ski mountaineering equipment, etc.
A mountain leader is able to predict the development of the local and weather conditions, foresee different kinds of danger and possible storms, assess the snow conditions, estimate the avalanche danger, etc.
Even if you are going to the mountains with a mountain leader, you need mountain insurance which covers mountain rescue service costs. All the SAHS members are obliged to have third-party liability insurance.
